About Sullivan Entertainment's Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel
(also known as Anne of Avonlea in the U.S.)
Anne, who has now bloomed into an attractive 18-year-old, has dutifully remained at Green Gables with Marilla Cuthbert. Taking a position as a teacher at Avonlea's school, she has put her ambition to become a celebrated author aside for now. Gilbert Blythe, Anne's childhood rival, has become a good friend and confidant. He is now entering medical school and is desperately in love with Anne. He tries in vain to convince her to marry him; yet, Anne remains as imaginative and romantic as ever, as she dreams of some day meeting her ideal man. She is disappointed and hurt to learn her once "bosom friend", Diana Barry, intends to marry the decidedly business-like and unromantic Fred Wright. Pondering her friend's imminent wedding, she laments, "Why does everyone have to grow up... and marry... and change?"
The opportunity arises for Anne to teach at an exclusive private girls school in Kingsport, Nova Scotia. Anne's desire to see more of the world and accomplish more with her life has begun to infringe on her turbulent relationships with Gilbert and Diana.
Anne is soon convinced she must leave. She departs without reconciling matters with Gilbert.
Anne may have grown, but she still has a knack for finding trouble. After overcoming a rocky beginning at her new school, Anne gradually succeeds in winning over the old-money Kingsport establishment, and gaining the respect of her students and superiors.
Feeling homesick for Green Gables and Marilla, Anne returns to Prince Edward Island when summer arrives. Gilbert Blythe also returns to the island, seriously ill with scarlet fever. His illness causes Anne to re-evaluate her feelings for Gilbert. She finally expresses her deep love for him when he is at his lowest.
Gilbert recovers from his illness over the summer. Once restored to health he summons the courage to propose to Anne again. In accepting Gilbert's proposal, she acknowledges how important he is - and always has been - in her life.
