The Township of Uxbridge, Ontario (pop. 18,000) lies a little over an hour from downtown Toronto. Uxbridge is a small rural community, with a down home charm. The majority of Road to Avonlea was filmed in Uxbridge.
Private Farmstead This farm is where the village of Avonlea stood. The village
was built along the exsisting driveway of the farm, near the main road.
The farmhouse at this location served two purposes. It was Green Gables in distant shots in Anne of Green Gables and it was the King farmhouse in Road to Avonlea.
The farm is located on 6th Concession, just south of Durham Regional Road 21 near Coppins Corners. The farmhouse and barn can be seen from the road. The farm is a private residence, and the owners do not wish to have visitors. Please respect their privacy.
Except for the King farmhouse and barn, the entire village, including Gus Pike's lighthouse, Rose Cottage and the cannery were all sets built for the show. The Avonlea Schoolhouse was the only building that had an interior that was used for filming. All of the other buildings were shells and stood from 1989 through 1996. In February of 1996, the set was demolished. In my photo's, you will see several of where the village once stood. To see a map of the village of Avonlea set, please click here. Pine Grove United Church
Located on 7th Concession, east of the Avonlea site and just north of Durham Regional Road 21. The Pine Grove United Church was the Avonlea Presbyterian Church. It was first seen in the episode Qaurantine at Alexander Abrhams's House.
it can also be seen in other episodes, such as Strictly Melodrama and The Materializing of Duncan McTavish. The church is still an active church, however services are limited to Christmas and Easter.
Other Uxbridge Sites
The exterior of Alexander Abraham's, from the Road to Avonlea episode Qaurantine at Alexander Abrhams's House, was an abandoned house near Uxbridge that has since been torn down.
The gate outside Margarett Lloyd's house in the Road to Avonlea episode Old Lady Lloyd, built specifically for the episode, was on a driveway neighbouring the village of Avonlea.Click HERE to visit the Town of Uxbridge web site.
